Healing Economic Trauma
Whether driven by natural disaster or man-made corruption, economic disenfranchisement is one of the biggest culprits in creating an insecure economy and culture. Remember the Great Recession of 2008? Communities were literally abandoned as people left their homes and neighborhoods in search of scarce economic opportunities. It was a painful time, and very few of us escaped untouched. When you are in economic survival mode, you can be forced to make choices you aren’t proud of—decisions that are totally out of character and go completely against your sense of pride and integrity. Often, when you move to a better place those choices can haunt you. Forgiving this kind of trauma is especially difficult. Even after you are “out of the woods,” there is a period of time when you may continue to look over your shoulder or find yourself immersed in an old memory that triggers all the feelings you felt back then. Your healing journey and Get Paid commitment must call for a new level of engagement—one where your finances are in your hands and you see yourself as a conscious, active shaper and participant in your own destiny. It needs to be an opportunity where you feel you have something valuable to offer the marketplace and something to gain, as well. When you can align how you share your gifts with your conscious participation in a more empowering economic system, you have all the ingredients to foster a new way to Get Paid. I met my beloved brother (from another mother) William while hiking a gorgeous trail outside Aspen; we were part of a small group of leaders who’d been invited to gather for a two-day laboratory on collaboration. The people in this room were literally working on some of the toughest social, political, and economic challenges of our time and I was honored to be among them. We gathered to explore the notion of collaboration and to push one another’s thinking about our respective and potentially collective work. This was a room primed with the kind of urgency that called for big visions and bold actions—these were game changers—actively looking to move the needle on war, poverty, corruption, and the environment. It’s one thing to think about how to heal your own personal economic trauma, but what does it take to heal a war-torn global region filled with hostile and conflicting ideologies? William was one of the co-facilitators of the event, and as we wandered along the steep and rocky ridges he shared his life story with me: “I’m an anthropologist by training. And a wonderer and wanderer by nature.”
I was fascinated by all the places he’d been around the globe, from the ancient Mediterranean region of Mesopotamia (in the Middle East) to significant sacred sites like Chichen Itza (the Mayan ruins in Mexico), not to mention all the fascinating people he’d met. William is a global citizen working in some of most volatile conflict regions in the world. Given this, one would think he’d be dark, gloomy, and jaded, but he was just the opposite.
